The first hustler mower was created in 1964 by John Reiger of Moundridge, Kansas, to unburden his wife from her mowing duties. Reiger modified a design for a steering system and transmission commonly used on haying equipment. With a mix of drives and belts, he was able to create a different kind of mower that no one else had thought of. No other mower could cut grass like this Hustler mower. It could reverse directions in a turn with a radius of precisely zero degrees, an achievement unattained by any other driven machinery.
Reiger cleverly created the first zero-turn mower, which can cut closely even around obstacles that virtually need no trimming. Zero-turns can pivot 180 degrees without leaving any uncut grass. 
This type of mower allows maximum lever movement for highest fluid flow, enabling wheels to rapidly turn. When both wheels turn at equal speeds, the machine follows a straight path. When the wheels turn in opposite directions or if one stops and the other turns, the mower pivots.
Reiger sold his first rough models in 1964. He was able to build and sell over 24 lawn mowers, only operating in his shop at home. After realizing that he could not keep up with his production alone, he showed his designs to Excel Industries in the neighboring town of Hesston. As timely as it could get, Excel was thinking about expanding beyond manufacturing tractor cabs at that time. The people at Excel were impressed with Reiger’s inventions, and Excel took Hustler under its wing. The company promptly started the assembly-line and factory production of commercial-grade hustler mowers in Hesston.
